Tikal, in nearby Guatemala, is considered the greatest city of the Mayan civilization and the most visually sensational archaeological excavation in Central America.
The Maya built awesome temples and cities to form a complex political and social system. Tikal has over 3,000 structures within six square miles, including palaces, temples, ceremonial platforms, ball courts, plazas and reservoirs. Among the world’s travel wonders, Tikal has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Throughout your tour of the park, you will learn about Mayan history, culture and traditions, as well as indigenous birds, jungle animals, trees and plants of the area, including medicinal uses. Perhaps you’ll see a multitude of oriole nests, defended by the males who work so hard to build one to the satisfaction of the female, or myriad other tropical birds, howler monkeys, maybe a coatimundi or other small wild animal.
This excursion requires a 6 AM departure from the Lodge, crossing the Belize/Guatemala border from Benque Viejo to Melchor de Mencos, and a 1.5 hour drive in Guatemala. You arrive at Tikal and meet your expert guide between 9 and 9:30 AM, for a four-hour narrated tour that involves about 6 miles of walking. After your tour, you’ll have time to shop at the on-site kiosks for Guatemalan arts and crafts, and typical souvenirs.
An abbreviated tour is available by special bus for guests unable to walk six miles. A small charge applies for onsite transportation. Your Mariposa driver will be waiting for you when you return to the Border around 4:30-5:00.
