Village Culture Tour
This tour offers a unique opportunity to experience and understand the lifestyle and culture of the local people in our area. Throughout the tour, your guide will offer informative and entertaining commentary on the habits, beliefs and differences of the various peoples in the villages of San Antonio and Seven Miles/El Progresso, many of whose families migrated to Belize from other Latin American countries.
In the village of Seven Miles (El Progresso) you will learn about the cooperative that first brought water to our Lodge and homes in the area. Then you’ll be driven around San Antonio Village where you’ll see a variety of homes, churches, stores, police department and jail, and learn quaint aspects of life in a village of about 2,000 people.
The highlight of the excursion occurs when you visit local homes. First you will be welcome in a San Antonio home with electricity, television and an inside view of the family’s wide range of entrepreneurial interests. Learn about and shop at the Village Women’s Cooperative, where you will not be pressured to buy. Then you will be able to contrast between a home and lifestyle in the heart of the Village and the more rural lifestyle of a local multi-generational family living in the collective family tradition and how they live without public utilities (other than unheated water).
Your hosts and hostesses will describe the daily routine of the women and children who perform the tasks at home, as well as the usual family diet, sources of food and a typical budget. Learn how to select beans and make a delicious bean dip. Try your hand at making tortillas with the women who prepare the family’s daily bread. Children will meet children of many ages. Your visit will culminate in a buffet lunch consisting of a variety of typical Mayan and Belizean dishes.
You are welcome to ask your hosts appropriate questions. When your host does not speak English, your guide will translate for you.
