BABOON SANCTUARY
The Community Howler Monkey Sanctuary in Burrell Boom offers an excellent opportunity for visitors to experience Black Howler Monkeys in the wild. This innovative and unique grassroots conservation project was designed to protect and sustain the habitat of the endangered Black Howler Monkey (called ‘baboon’ in the local Creole dialect) while promoting the economic development of the participating communities. More than 200 private landowners in seven villages stretching over 20 square miles voluntarily pledged to conserve their land to protect the Black Howler Monkey habitat.
One of the most remarkable traits of the howler monkey is its loud, rasping howl, which can be heard roaring across the forest for well over a mile. You will undoubtedly hear this howl as you enter the Belize Community Baboon Sanctuary.
Visiting the Community Baboon Sanctuary will provide an excellent experience since there are lovely nature hikes where you can experience Black Howler Monkeys firsthand, wonder at the majesty of the rainforest, and learn about traditional rainforest medicine.
The more adventurous can enjoy night tours through the rainforest, where you can experience the local wildlife when it is most active. Alternatively, take a river tour searching for crocodiles, monkeys, and other wildlife.
